You Can Manage Your Tinnitus: Here's How

Posted on

When you first come down with tinnitus, you may think you're stuck dealing with the ringing in your ears for the rest of your life. There's a bit of folklore that insists once your ears start ringing, they don't stop. This may have been true years ago when doctors and researchers did not know a lot about the condition, but it's not true now. There are plenty of ways to manage and treat your tinnitus, and here are a few of them.

Earwax Removal

This is the first possibility to explore. A good portion of cases of tinnitus are simply caused by an excessive buildup of wax in the ears. If you can have the wax cleared out, then your tinnitus may go away completely or at least ease up. Most doctors offer earwax removal, as it's a pretty simple process. It may be a little uncomfortable as they flush your ears with water or peroxide, but it should not hurt.

Blood Pressure Medications

Ringing in the ears can be an early symptom of high blood pressure. You should certainly have your blood pressure checked if you have this symptom. Most pharmacies will measure your blood pressure so you don't even need to make an appointment with your doctor to have it checked. If it is high, then make an appointment; your doctor will likely recommend blood pressure lowering meds which will not only help treat your tinnitus but also help reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Hearing Aids

Sometimes tinnitus is actually an early sign of hearing loss. You may not yet realize that your hearing is beginning to suffer, but others around you might have noticed it. A hearing test is quick and painless. If your hearing is beginning to become impaired, your doctor can fit you with hearing aids, which should help ease the ringing.

Anti-Depressants

At times, ringing in the ears can be a sign of uncontrolled, high stress. The stress could raise your blood pressure, which in turn results in tinnitus. Or, the stress itself could be causing you to hear the ringing. Taking anti-depressants can help lower your stress levels and keep this and other symptoms under control.

If you are dealing with tinnitus, there's no reason to keep suffering. Contact your doctor for an appointment, and get checked out. A doctor will likely recommend a tinnitus treatment like one of the ones above.
